Monday, February 02 - SAT Dates
Students are reminded of the SAT dates for the 2014 - 15 school year. The SAT is a very important part of the college admission process. Juniors should take the SAT second semester. See College Counselor Lisa Fauklenberry for more details.
Dates are: Mar 14, May 2, and June 6.

The ACT is another option for students involved in the college application process. For more details - see Lisa Fauklenberry, College Counselor. The dates are:

Monday, February 02 - Westwood Prom
The theme for this year's PROM is "Midnight in Morocco" and is April 11th from 8 - 11:30pm. Tickets are currently $65.00 until the end of March. If you wait until after Spring Break, they will be $100.00. You must complete an "Outside Guest From" to bring someone not from this school. Forms must be returned by March 26th. Seniors - if you attended the prom last yearand have paid your fees, then see Ms. Bell to be added to the guest list. If you are not on the guest list, you will not be admitted to the prom.
Tuesday, February 03 - SAT/ACT Help Sessions
Westwood will offer students help on preparing for the SAT and the ACT on Tuesdays and Thursday after school. Tuesday is focused on Critical Reading and Thursdays on Math. These sessions will continue through the end of the school year. Sessions will be in Room 323 immediately after school.
Monday, March 16 - Congrats to HOSA Winners
Students and teachers from Westwood attended the SC HOSA conference. Twenty students competed in many different healthcare related events against other students from across the state. According to HOSA advisor Mandy Ashley, "Our students were amazing and we out so proud to give you these results." Winning awards were:Jessica Butler-top 10 in Medical Reading, Terrell Foster - top 10 in Medical Law, Clanesha Munford - top 10 in Medical Photography, Darshawna Barnes-Mack - top 10 in Medical Photography, Donzelle Benton and Alyssa Hansen- 3rd place in Forensic Medicine, Kiara Mack, Kyara Livingston, Vanessa Harris, and Faith Bryant- 1st place in Community Awareness, and Jairad Hydrick- 1st place in Sports Medicine. Two students, Vanessa Harris and Kyara Livingston, receive scholarships. Kyara Livingston was also named as the new SC HOSA Secretary.
Monday, March 16 - State Strength Meet Winners
This past weekend 12 athletes from Westwood competed at the State Strength Meet and 6 of the 12 placed. Andrew Plante repeated as the State Champion. According to Coach Rodney Summers, "The actual team standings are not given at the SC State Strength Meet, but we can always check to see who would have won if points were tallied as they are for a track meet. And if they were, Westwood and AC Flora would have been tied for number one this year. Please congratulate these young men on their hard work and dedication to the weight room."

Monday, March 16 - Sports Physicals April 18th
The Moore Center for Orthopedics will be offering Sports Physicals to Westwood Athletes on Saturday April 18th, 2015 at its Northeast Columbia location next to Providence Northeast Hospital on Farrow Rd. The Richland Two physicals packet must be completed and turned in along with the $10.00 fee to the Westwood Athletic Training staff by April 15th. Bus transportation will be provided from the school. All proceeds directly support Westwood Sports Medicine and allow us to buy supplies and equipment to keep our Redhawks soaring high over the competition! Monday, March 16 - Teachers & Tiaras
Miss Westwood and Mr Westwood have been decided - now it is a teachers' turn. Announcing Teachers and Tiaras - a Faculty Showcase. The event is planned for Monday, April 13th. Teachers will compete in Weekend Wear, Fromal Wear and Talent. The contest proceeds will benefit the Westwood Backpack Program.
Monday, March 16 - Congrats to Stacy Plotner and London Allen
English teacher and Global 13 organizer Stacy Plotner was given the Human Rights Award by the Frederick Douglass Foundation in Atlanta this past weekend. Plotner was selected for her outstanding work in organizing students at Westwood as modern abolitionists and against human trafficking. One of her students, London Allen, won an Honorable Mention in the White House Student Film Festival. London's video addressed the issue of human trafficking.
Monday, March 23 - Seven FBLA Members Qualify for National Conference
The Westwood Future Business Leaders of America members competed at the SC FBLA State Leadership Conference this past weekend in Charleston. We are excited to continue to excel in these competitive event that showcase their skills and help prepare them for future careers. Winners were - 1st Place Ija Charles - Business Plan; 2nd Place Bryanna Commander - Local Chapter Annual Business Report, Madison Hancock & Alicia Parson - Social Media Campaign and Ashli White - Digital Video Production; 3rd Place Aubree Rubadeau - Database Design & Applications; and 4th Place - Janelle Brown - Business Procedures. These students will attend the national conference in Chicago this summer. The Westwood Chapter received the Gold Seal of Merit.
Monday, March 23 - Student Government Wins State 4A Chapter of the Year
Westwood High School's Student Council is named the 2015 AAAA Student Council of the Year! Congratulations also to Nick Hooks for being inducted into the Terry McCoy Hall of Fame and to Ekklesia Hawkins for being recognized as the SC District 4 Chair for 2014-15.
Monday, March 23 - Hooks & Knight Elected to Lead Westwood Next Year
Nick Hooks was elected President of the Student Body and Megan Knight was elected Vice President for the 2015 - 16 School Year. This year the election was done differently with the President and Vice-President running as a team. Both look forward to working with the student body to continue to build a great Student Government and an awesome school.
Monday, March 23 - History Day Winners from SOAR
Two Westwood juniors Marilyn Guy and William Ellis won at the National History Day in South Carolina Midlands Region competition based on the theme - Leadership & Legacy. Marilyn portrayed Sherlock Holmes lecturing a class on forensic science with flashbacks on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's books. William portryed Charles Mason's son writing a letter to his father in prison and reflecting on the devestating legacy Mason left. Both will now compete at the state level in April.
