Monday, February 03 - WHS Blood Drive
The Blood Drive is Friday, March 7th from 9 - 3 in the Auxiliary Gym. This event is being co-sponsored by HOSA and JROTC. Students can get Westwood Serves credit for participating. To sign up, students need to come by Room 240 and see Mrs. Ashley. Students that are 16 must have parent permission. If you signed up before, just keep your appointment times. If you did not sign up, but want to see Mrs. Ashley.
Monday, March 03 - Convergence Media Program Names First Quill & Scroll Members
Convergence Media has established a chapter of Quill & Scroll, the honorary high school journalism organization. Juniors and seniors are selected for their academics,completion of either Journalism II or Media Production, and outstanding production in their area. Yearbook students selected are Monique Holland and Kevin Holloway; photographers selected were Cozette Renshke, Danielle Orrecchio and Wendy Lara; and broadcast students Jsairad Hydrick, Jeremy Johnson, Aubria Myers, Jasmine Brown, and Tyree Harris.
Monday, March 03 - Westwood's First Robotics Team
Engineering teacher Chris Oonk, nine students and Principal Ralph Schmidt and Asst. Principal Dr. Cheryl Guy attend the First Robotics Competition in Myrtle Beach this past weekend. According to team member Michael Doucette, one of the best things about the competition was how all teams worked together - experieinced ones helped new ones like Westwood. The engineering got great ideas for next year's team.
Monday, March 03 - Vicki Finkley-Brown WLTX Teacher of the Week
English teacher Vicki Finley-Brown was surprised on Friday by a camera crew from WLTX. Finkley-Brown had been nominated by her husband as WLTX Teacher of the Week. She teaches English 3 and Reading Seminar.

Seniors will receive Graduation Information on Wednesday, March 5th during Advisory. Graducation informarion booklets will be handed out; you must be there to receive your booklet.
Monday, March 03 - French/ American Cultural Exchange
French teacher Bill McCormick arranged for a video conference to introduce our exchange school to South Carolina Culture. Three teachers presented information: Steve Wilson - BBQ; Kathy Carroll - American diversity; and Vicki Finley-Brown - the role of American-Africians. The French teachers and students had trouble following the heavy Southern accents but are thrilled with the exchange.
Monday, March 03 - Track Team Runs Away at the Sumter Relays
The Boys and Girls Track team took 35 runners to the Sumter Relays and came away with 58 medals. The team is off to a great start and will compete March 5th at the Battle of the Woods held this year at Blythewood. last year's team last was Westwood's first regional champs and also scored 3 state champs. they look forward to another outstanding year under Coach Lawrence Terry.
Monday, March 03 - Fire Management Program Receives Grant
The Fire Management Program received a $7,500.00 grant from the South Carolina Fire Association. The grant covers equipment and Westood teacher Steve Wilson plans to spend it on masks, halogan tool, and special fire axes.
Monday, March 03 - Evan Carringan
Sophomore wrestler Evan Carrigan won the State Championship in his weight class of 120 this past weekend. Carrigan has a season record of 58 - 1 and is the first state champion in wrestling.
Monday, March 03 - Studio D Applications Now!
Studio D, Westwood's School of Innovation and Design, is now accepting applications for the 2014-2015 school year. Studio D is open to rising freshman, sophomores, and juniors only at this time. Students interested in joining the Studio D difference can fill out an application online at http://whsstudiod.weebly.com or can stop by Coach K's office (room 107) and pick one up in person. Applications are due no later than April 1, 2014. Monday, March 10 - Kick-off to Spring Sports Season
The scrimmages are over and the Spring Sports Season begins on Monday, March 10th. Westwood has teams covering boys baseball and girls softball, girls and boys track and field, boys and girls soccer, and boys tennis and golf. Checkout the schedules posted on the school webpage and come out to see our Redhawks play.
