Senior Chief Operations Officer Mark Huhtanen Inducted into the 2026 Fort Jackson Hall of Fame
Richland School District Two proudly congratulates Senior Chief Operations Officer Mark Huhtanen on his induction into the 2026 Fort Jackson Hall of Fame, one of the highest honors bestowed by Fort Jackson recognizing Soldiers, civilians, and community leaders who have made outstanding contributions to the installation and the United States Army.
Huhtanen is one of four distinguished individuals selected for the 2026 class. He was recognized for his exceptional leadership and service during a military career spanning nearly 30 years before retiring as a Colonel.
Among his many accomplishments, Huhtanen was honored for his service as a brigade commander during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he helped Fort Jackson successfully continue Army training operations while implementing social distancing protocols and other safety measures. He was also recognized for his work as deputy commander, where he reinvigorated partnerships between Fort Jackson and the surrounding community, ensuring residents understood the installation's commitment to serving and supporting the Midlands.
Additionally, Huhtanen played a key role in establishing and implementing the Army's Future Soldier Preparatory Course, an innovative program that expanded opportunities for enlistment by helping recruits improve their physical fitness and academic readiness before beginning military training.
Reflecting on the honor, Huhtanen said he was "extremely humbled" by the recognition.
"Sometimes you don't fully realize the impact you've had until you've moved on," he said.
Today, Huhtanen continues his commitment to public service through his role as Senior Chief Operations Officer for Richland School District Two. He credits his military career with providing the organizational leadership skills he now uses to support students, employees, and families across the district.
Huhtanen also emphasized that the recognition belongs to the many people who served alongside him throughout his career.
"Any success I've had is because of the incredible people I've had the opportunity to serve with," he said. "I've also been extremely fortunate to have a loving and patient wife and two phenomenal sons whose support made it all possible."
