Catawba Trail Elementary School kicked off its 1st Annual Touchdown with Dads event with an overwhelming show of spirit, as nearly 200 dads, stepdads, grandfathers, and father figures joined students for a morning of connection and encouragement.

What began as a classroom idea from fourth-grade teacher Kelly Fulton quickly grew into a powerful schoolwide celebration honoring the vital role of fathers in education.

“When I shared my vision with Dr. Jones, she immediately said, ‘Let’s make it happen,’” said Fulton. “Seeing so many fathers walk through our doors with pride and purpose was powerful. The smiles, laughter, and stories reminded us that family engagement changes everything.”

The event featured guest speakers, Aaron Ashford and Coach Cameron Butler, who inspired attendees with uplifting messages about leadership, legacy, and the importance of showing up for children.

Ashford, a 28-year educator, counselor, and motivational speaker, reminded fathers, “You can’t just sit on the sidelines and expect things to happen — everyone must do their part.”

Assistant Principal Eryl Smalls encouraged dads to stay involved by joining the Trailmates Mentoring Program, visiting classrooms, and eating lunch with their children.

Following the program, fathers visited classrooms to meet teachers, take photos, and share memories.

Principal Dr. Tia Jones reflected, “This morning was filled with purpose, pride, and positivity. When fathers show up, children stand taller. Our mission at Catawba Trail is to cultivate Relationships first, Rigor always, and Resilience forever. Connection builds confidence, and community builds success.”

Dr. Jones shared that the school plans to continue the momentum with a monthly Dads on Duty program, where fathers will serve as positive role models across campus.

“It was a glorious day filled with joy, excitement, and purpose,” said Dr. Jones. “Our community truly showed that CTE is the place to be!”
