Attendance Matters
Regular school attendance plays an important role in your child’s success. Students who attend school consistently are more likely to perform well academically, stay on track for graduation, and be prepared for future opportunities such as college, careers, and scholarships. Building strong attendance habits now helps set the foundation for responsibility later in life.
South Carolina law requires students in kindergarten through 12th grade to attend at least 170 out of 180 school days each year in order to receive credit for the academic year.
For students ages 12 to 17, attendance is also a legal responsibility. Continued unexcused absences may lead to truancy consequences, including possible involvement with the Department of Juvenile Justice.
We encourage families to partner with us to support strong attendance and reach out if you need assistance.
When your student is absent
We value strong communication between families and schools to support student success. Please review the following expectations for attendance and missed work:
-
If you know your child will be absent, please contact their teacher(s) in advance to plan for any missed assignments.
-
Send a written excuse (such as a medical note or parent note) for every absence and submit it to the school’s attendance secretary.
-
Keep your contact information up to date so the school can reach you when needed.
-
If your child will be absent for an extended period or has frequent absences, please connect with the attendance secretary or a school administrator to discuss your situation.
-
Let the school know if there are challenges or barriers that are making it difficult for your child to attend regularly—we are here to help.
-
Support your child in completing missed work and stay in communication with their teacher.
-
Please note that virtual learning is not available for absences. If a student is not at school, they are considered absent.
-
If you have questions or need support at any time, please reach out—we are here to partner with you.
