Free to Focus

Free to Focus SC is the South Carolina Department of Education's initiative to create a phone-free school environment that fosters a positive learning experience free from electronic distractions. 

The policy aims to enhance student focus, reduce behavioral issues, and improve academic performance by minimizing distractions caused by personal electronic devices.

The policy is set for statewide implementation on January 1, 2025.

Students are prohibited from using cell phones and other personal devices from bell to bell during the school day.

Elementary - 7:40 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Middle - 8:20 a.m. - 3:15 pm

High - 8:50 a.m. - 3:53 p.m.

Students are allowed to use devices on the bus, before or after school, on field studies and at athletic events.

The policy prohibits access to personal electronic communication devices, including cell phones, smartwatches, tablets, and wireless earbuds, during school hours.

Yes, exceptions are allowed for medical or educational purposes with written approval.

Parents can contact the school's main office to relay urgent messages to their children.

Schools have comprehensive emergency plans and will notify parents through ParentSquare which sends texts, emails, social media posts, and app notifications.
