Parents and Students,

The 8th Grade promotion ceremony will begin promptly at 8:30 AM on Friday, May 26, 2017 in the Blythewood Middle School Gymnasium.  Since there will be a large crowd attending, we respectfully ask that you and your guests be seated as soon as possible.  As a courtesy to everyone, we respectfully ask that you refrain from saving seats and also that you turn off/silence your cell phones.

If you are planning to take your student(s) with you after the ceremony, please complete the bottom portion of this letter and have your student(s) return it to his/her homeroom teacher by Thursday, May 25, 2017.  There will also be a homeroom sign-out roster in the front lobby.

Upcoming Movie Presentation Opt-Out Forms

Standards-based Movie and Curriculum Presentation

As we continue to make learning meaningful and engaging for our students during these last few days of school, while also recognizing that students are excited as they attend their various awards ceremonies and eagerly anticipating the last day of the school, the administrative team, together with the teachers, have elected to showcase popular box-office hits that also touch upon our State Standards.  On Wednesday, May 24th,  the school will show two movies, Hidden Figures (PG), based off of the book of the same title and The Lorax (PG), also based off of the book of the same title.  As students are watching these movies, students will be responsible for completing the lesson plans/worksheets that go along with the movie.

Please note that parents have the opportunity to opt their student(s) out of watching one or both of these movies.  Students that opt out of the movies will be given an alternative assignment to work on in an alternate location.

If you or your child desire to opt out of the viewing of either of the movies, please complete the form below and submit it to your child’s homeroom teacher by the morning of May 24th.  If a form is not received, it is deemed that your child has permission to view the movies.

Summer Reading

Throughout the school year, we encourage students to read a variety of books and resources to expose them to different genres. This also allows students independence in making choices about what he/she wants to learn. Summertime is a great opportunity to continue this type of personalized learning as a family. Scholastic shares Three ways to prevent summer slide to help you get started.

Richland Library is kicking off their annual Summer Learning Challenge on June 1st where children and adults earn points for reading and attending public library events. Children and adults exchange points for prizes. At BMS, we encourage students to track their summer reading  and return a completed summer reading log in the fall at the start of school. Students that turn in a completed summer reading log are invited to a summer reading celebration held at the school during the school day.
