ESOL

The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program at Spring Valley High School is divided into four main levels: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and Monitored/Mainstream. The English proficiency level of incoming ESOL students is ascertained through the administration of the Woodcock-Munoz Language Survey on the day the student enrolls. Students coming to SV from a middle school are placed in the proficiency level recommended by the middle school teacher. All beginner students are enrolled in both an ESOL class and an ESOL lab. Students remain active in the ESOL program until they meet guidelines set by the State Department of Education to move to monitored and then exited status.

ESOL instruction focuses on developing basic interpersonal communication skills and cognitive academic language skills of the English language learner (ELL). Beginner level classes focus on acquiring interpersonal communication skills. Intermediate classes combine interpersonal communication and academic language skills, and advanced classes emphasize academic language skills.
