Dual Language Immersion (DLI)

Dual Language Immersion at Polo Road

In the Fall of 2015, Polo Road began a Spanish-English Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program. DLI will provide students the opportunity to begin second language acquisition in a meaningful context. For its inaugural year, DLI will be available to kindergarten students. The program will expand by one grade level each subsequent year, reaching full (K-5th grade) implementation in the 2020-21 school year.

What is Language Immersion?

It is the fastest-growing and most effective world language instructional model.  Immersion offers students an opportunity to learn a second language in the same manner in which they learn their first languages—by living it.

How does a dual language immersion program work?

The DLI classes consist of native English speakers and native Spanish speakers. Students have the benefit of working with two highly qualified educators. An English-speaking teacher provides instruction in English Language Arts and Social Studies for one-half of the school day and a Spanish-speaking teacher provides instruction in Spanish Language Arts, science and math for the other half of the school day.

How might DLI benefit participating students?

DLI helps prepare students for the jobs of tomorrow, giving students a tremendous advantage in an increasingly competitive, globalized world.
Additionally, students who participate in DLI programs:
  •  perform as well or better than their peers on standardized achievement tests;
  •  demonstrate superior problem-solving skills, attention control and memory               retention;
  •  garner an appreciation for diverse cultures, enabling them to interact effectively       with persons of different backgrounds and interests.

How will students be chosen to participate in DLI?

Students are selected to participate through Richland Two’s magnet selection process. The application process is completed on-line, beginning in January.  Click on the link above for additional information.

**While students are not chosen for DLI based on academic eligibility criteria, the program is most beneficial if the native English-speakers are readers or emerging readers.
