School districts to hold friendly basketball rematch to defeat breast cancer

9/2/2015

Two Midlands school districts are lacing up and taking it to the basketball court to see who can score the most points and raise the most money to fight breast cancer. It’s all part of the 2nd annual Nothing but Net charity basketball game featuring Richland One and Richland Two employees. The event will be held Thursday, October 8 at 6 p.m. at W.J. Keenan High School, 361 Pisgah Church Road, Columbia, 29203.

At last year’s inaugural event, the Richland Two team won the basketball challenge by two points, earning it bragging rights and a trophy to display at its district office. Richland One raised the most funds and won the free throw contest. While it is serious competition on the hardwood, in the end, “Team Richland,” a joint effort of both districts, raised almost $100,000 last year to benefit the Palmetto Health Breast Center through Walk for Life/Race for Life.

The Nothing but Net challenge will feature a breast cancer survivor celebration/recognition presentation, a mascot competition and free throw shooting contest between Richland One Superintendent Dr. Craig Witherspoon and Richland Two School Board Chairman James Manning. Former Spring Valley High basketball coach Bobby Cunningham is coaching the Richland Two team, along with Blythewood High Athletics Director Vince Lowry as his assistant. Richland One’s coach is Ben Trapp, former Keenan High boys’ basketball coach, and Van McCloud, former Keenan High girls’ basketball coach.

Admission is $5 for everyone age 6 and up. Tickets are available at the Richland One and Richland Two district offices and they will be sold at the door. For more information, contact Dr. Traci Young Cooper (Richland One) at 803.231.6842; traci.cooper@richlandone.org or Dr. Theresa Riley Stephens (Richland Two) 803.738.3232; triley@richland2.org.
