SPM STUDENT WINS STATE PEACE POSTER CONTEST
SPM STUDENT WINS STATE PEACE POSTER CONTEST
12/27/2019
COLUMBIA, S.C. — Summit Parkway Middle School eighth grader Makayla Brown has been named the state winner of the Lions Club International Peace Poster Contest. Her poster, depicting the theme “Journey of Peace,” will now be judged along with 66,000 other posters worldwide. The world winner will receive a cash prize of $5,000 and a trip to Lions Day at the United Nations in New York City.
Makayla won her school’s competition, then moved on to win the Lions District 32S contest between schools in the Midlands and Upstate. From there, judges selected her poster as the best in the state. At each level she has won cash prizes and, along with her teacher Talbot Glover, will be recognized at the Lions Club district and state conventions next year.
The Lions Club International Peace Poster Project is a global outreach program offered through local Lion Clubs. This project brings students together from all over the world to render their artistic interpretation of the selected theme of peace for that year. This is the 23rd year that Richland Two middle schools have participated in the competition. The Blythewood Lions Club partners with the school district to sponsor the contest. An overall winning poster was selected at each school judged on artistic merit, expression of the theme and originality of the work.
