SES TEACHER NAMED DEC. ROOKIE OF THE BLOCK
SES TEACHER NAMED DEC. ROOKIE OF THE BLOCK
12/27/2019
COLUMBIA, S.C. — A melodic theme was the order of the day when Sandlapper Elementary first-year music teacher, William Melven, was recognized as the December 2019 Rookie Teacher of the Block. The award is sponsored by H&R Block, a dedicated partner of Richland School District Two. Mr. Roberts was surprised with the announcement on the school’s morning TV show.
Mr. Melven’s passion for music drives his approach to teaching his students. His classroom features lots of movement based instructional strategies that support his understanding of brain based research. He demonstrates a positive attitude through his interactions with students and colleagues and he is always quick to pitch in and help others.
Sandlapper Principal Mrs. Connie May spoke in glowing terms in her nomination of Mr. Melven. “As a new teacher, he is creating a strong foundation for relationships with students and parents. He teaches in our after school program which serves to further his relationships with students,” she says. “When a student is successful, pure joy is shown by Mr. Melven. He encourages and celebrates student success which creates a strong, joyful classroom environment.”
Mrs. May adds. “That as a first year teacher, Mr. Melven has already proven to be an outstanding asset to the teaching community. He is a strong team member, creates well prepared music lessons, steps up to assist any staff member in need and most importantly he has a true heart for teaching our students.”
Rookie Teacher of the Block winners receive multiple gifts from H&R Block including a plaque to hang outside their door and a Kindle Fire for their personal use. They also receive an unique trophy designed by the 3D Printing class at the Richland Two Institute of Innovation (R2i2).
