SCABSE NAMES RICHLAND TWO ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL THE BEST IN SOUTH CAROLINA

8/14/2022

Dr. Whitney L. Prowell, an assistant principal at Joseph Keels Elementary School, is the first recipient of the Assistant Principal of the Year award from the South Carolina Alliance of Black School Educators. Keels principal Alvera Butler nominated Dr. Prowell for the award saying she is an exemplar in her role.

“Dr. Prowell has worked closely with our School Improvement Council in its development of relevant goals over the years including the successful implementation of our Virtual School Health and Wellness Carnival. The Carnival as well as the implementation of our Science Unlimited Program which is ongoing and designed to boost student engagement levels with science and SC PASS scores, were both programs that catapulted our school into the spotlight as one of only five state finalists for the 2022 Dick and Tunky Riley SIC Award,” said Butler.

Dr. Prowell began her educational career as a fourth-grade teacher in Greenville. She came to Richland Two in 2009 and began teaching third grade in the Academy of Civic Engagement magnet program at Lonnie B. Nelson Elementary School. In 2012-2013, her peers at Nelson named her the Teacher of the Year. Dr. Prowell has also been an assistant principal at Bridge Creek Elementary. In 2020, Columbia Business Monthly featured her in its Best and Brightest 35 and under publication.

“I am honored to be recognized by SCABSE as the 2022 Elementary Assistant Principal of the Year. I work with so many stellar educators and this award reflects our collaborative efforts. Our work is important. I am going to continue to do the work that needs to be done in order to ensure all students receive the best education possible,” Dr. Prowell said.

Dr. Prowell is a graduate of Furman University. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education. At the University of South Carolina, she earned a Master of Education Degree in Educational Administration, Educational Specialist Degree in Educational Administration, and Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Administration.

SCABSE also selected Richland Two School Board member Dr. Monica Scott as a finalist for the 2022 SCABSE Retired Lifetime Achievement Award.
