SANDLAPPER ELEMENTARY LEAD TEACHER AMONG TOP 10 COMPUTER SCIENCE EDUCATORS

5/31/2022

Dr. Tim Swick, a Lead Teacher at Sandlapper Elementary School in Richland School District Two, is one of the best computer science teachers in the country. Dr. Swick is a recipient of the 2021-2022 CS Teaching Excellence Award. He is one of only 10 computer science teachers in the nation to receive the award from the Computer Science Teachers Association.

Dr. Swick is the Lead Teacher for the Computer Science Immersion School (CSIS) whole school magnet at Sandlapper. The purpose of CSIS is to prepare students for work, life, and citizenship by providing computer science coding skills to become effective collaborators and communicators, computational and creative thinkers, and problem solvers with a global perspective.

“Winning this award is a great personal achievement, but it really speaks to the success of our computer science immersion program as a whole. I am grateful for being able to work with a team of educators that embrace innovation and the importance of computer science for all students,” said Dr. Swick. “Our school-wide focus on computer science will hopefully break down barriers for our students and expose them to careers and opportunities that will put them on a path for future success.”

Dr. Swick is a National Board Certified Teacher, and holds a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of South Carolina with a focus on Educational Technology and Innovative Learning Design. His dissertation studied the impact of Computational Thinking in a school Makerspace.

Sandlapper Elementary School recently received the Magnet Schools of America 2022 National New and Emerging Merit Award of Excellence. Sandlapper is the only elementary school in the district that offers a full computer science integrated curriculum. Dr. Swick has been instrumental in its development.
