Round Top student wins Future Chef

Cameron Buchanon and Sodexo Area Manager Linda Green

With a tasty "cup" of tater tots, cheese and lean ground meat, Round Top Elementary school student Cameron Buchanon won the Seventh annual Future Chefs cooking competition hosted by Richland Two’s Food Services partner, Sodexo. Cameron's dish was named "Cam's Little Bites of Heaven."

Ten elementary students whipped up tasty dishes following this year’s theme of “Healthy Comfort Food.” Each student was assisted by a Sodexo cafe employee. Sodexo Area Manager Linda Green helped Cameron. For the first time, competitors were required to incorporate a bonus ingredient such as whole grain pasta, whole grain bread, brown rice, low-fat cheese, eggs, lean ground beef, turkey, potatoes or mushrooms. During the competition, students will be paired with a café employee who will assist and give pointers. A panel of three judges will evaluate the dishes for: taste, originality, ease of preparation, healthiness, kid-appeal and plate presentation.

Cameron will now compete at the regional level with the hopes of continuing on to become the National Future Chef winner.

The Future Chefs program is one of the many ways Sodexo shares its health and well-being expertise with the schools it serves.

The district and Sodexo invited the community and media to attend and cheer on students. R2i2 is located at 763 Fashion Drive, in the Village at Sandhill across from Belk.
