Richland Two and Richland Library Sandhills are teaming up for a virtual weeklong celebration of reading. Tuesday, March 2
nd is the kick off of Reading Across Richland Two, Expanding our Palettes with Diverse Stories. This year, the district is highlighting the importance of different perspectives and how together we weave a rich literary landscape of connection and understanding.
Tomorrow, nationally acclaimed children's author and Florence, South Carolina native, Varian Johnson, will lead a virtual Meet the Author session at 1:45 p.m. for third through fifth graders. Johnson is the author of several novels for children and young adults, including
The Parker Inheritance
, which won both Coretta Scott King Author Honor and Boston Globe/Horn Book Honor awards;
The Great Greene Heist
, an American Library Association Notable Children’s book and Kirkus Reviews Best Book; and the graphic novel
Twins
, illustrated by Shannon Wright, a National Public Radio Best Book.
For middle and high school students, Saturday, March 6, Richland Library Sandhills is hosting
Let’s Talk Race: Online Teen Book Group discussion from 3 - 4:30 p.m. Visit the library’s website for information on how to register. Registrants can then visit any branch to pick up a free copy of the book, Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You by Ibram X. Kendi and Jason Reynolds to read prior to the discussion and keep for their personal library.
Schools across the district will also host their own celebrations of reading this week.
