RTE named finalist for Palmetto's Finest

2/7/2017

Round Top Elementary is one of only nine South Carolina schools to be named finalists for the 2017 Palmetto’s Finest Schools Awards. The SC Association of School Administrators (SCASA) presents the awards each year to schools which offer the best in innovative, effective educational programs.

Round Top Elementary earned this honor after extensive evaluations by fellow educators and previous Palmetto’s Finest winners. The application process includes elements on student achievement, instructional programs, professional learning communities, and school culture.

Round Top Elementary has a diverse student population of 565 students. The school has received a Palmetto Gold Award, 2013 State & National School of Character Award and the 2016 SCEA Friend of Education Award.

Principal Jeaneen Tucker, who has been the principal of RTES since the school opened in 2003, was named the SC Art Education Association Principal of the Year in 2014.

The school's motto, Where learning takes flight,” is descriptive of every aspect of the school’s culture of excellence. RTES was the second elementary school in our district to open with a focus on Highly Effective Teaching (HET).  HET is a framework that emphasizes brain research and nine brain compatible elements that impact student achievement.  We have also implemented the Leader in Me (LiMe) framework that is based on Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID).  The LiMe framework teaches 21st century leadership skills and fosters a culture of student empowerment while AVID is designed to develop students’ critical thinking, literacy, and math skills across all content areas.

The finalist schools will gather in their schools on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at 1:45 p.m. to learn which have won the top honors.  The announcement will be streamed live to each of the finalist schools.
