Malika-Lightbourne_RVH.JPGRidge View High School (RVHS) senior Malika Lightbourne is a step closer to being recognized as one of the most academically distinguished students in America. Lightbourne has been named a semifinalist in the annual U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. She is the only senior in Richland Two and surrounding public school districts in the Midlands to reach the semifinalist level. Additionally, Lightbourne is the only one of six Richland Two seniors identified in January as Presidential Scholars candidates to advance to semifinalist and one of only 13 seniors in South Carolina to do so.

This honor is the latest in a long line of achievements for Lightbourne, a student in the Scholars Academy for Business and Law Magnet program at Ridge View. She is an AP Scholar with Distinction. She received the 2017 RVHS Academic Award for Excellence in Math and the 2016 RVHS Academic Award for Excellence in Science. Lightbourne also earned a Gold rating on the National Spanish Exam earlier this school year.

Presidential Scholars winners will be announced in early May and honored in Washington, D.C. Application to the program is by invitation only. Students are selected based on broad academic achievement; academic and artistic scholarship in the visual arts, the performing arts or creative writing; or outstanding scholarship and accomplishment in career and technical education fields.

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors.
