RICHLAND TWO BANDS STANDOUT WITH OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES IN STATE COMPETITION
RICHLAND TWO BANDS STANDOUT WITH OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES IN STATE COMPETITION
5/27/2022
Bands at four schools in Richland School District Two stood out recently in statewide competitions to win 2022 Outstanding Performance Awards. The South Carolina Band Directors Association has formally announced Blythewood Middle, Muller Road Middle, Blythewood High and Ridge View High school bands earned Outstanding Performance Awards for this school year.
To earn this award, bands must have demonstrated a high level of proficiency in all areas of their program. Points were earned through the successes each program experienced in Region and All-State Band, Concert Performance Assessment, and Solo and Ensemble. Band directors from each of the schools praised their students’ work ethic and dogged perseverance for their success.
Blythewood Middle Band Director Morgan Bostick said, “Bands have to earn a certain number of points at each event to qualify. I am ecstatic that our students were able to do extremely well in Region/All-State auditions, Concert Performance Assessment, and Solo and Ensemble.”
Muller Road Middle Band Director Michelle Ortiz said, “It is amazing to see our students develop and grow through their love for music. Resoundingly, our young musicians are learning that their extra hours of practice and hard work can lead to the success they are experiencing now and so much more.”
At their annual Concert Performance Assessment, both bands from Blythewood High School earned the highest rating possible: Superior with Distinction, with the Concert Band performing in Grade III, and the Wind Symphony performing in Grade VI-Masterworks. Blythewood Band Director Gregory Mulzet says, “Blythewood was one of only two high schools in the Columbia area to earn multiple Superiors with Distinction, and one of five high schools in the entire state to perform Grade VI-Masterworks.”
Ridge View Band Director Dustin King said, “Over the past year, the band program has continued its legacy of success by winning the 4A Lower State Championship and placing 6th in the 4A State Championships. At the concert performance assessment, the RVHS Symphonic Band received a Superior rating and RVHS Wind Ensemble received a Superior with Distinction rating. Thirteen ensembles received Superior ratings at Solo & Ensemble assessment.”
The Outstanding Performance Award is the highest achievement for band programs in South Carolina.
