R2 teams to show off innovative projects

Last year, two middle school media specialists sought to transform their respective media centers into makerspaces where learners, teachers and students could all come to create, explore and connect. They applied to have their project accepted to R2 Innovates, Richland Two’s innovation incubator. They called their project Future Ready Libraries. Fast-forward to this year, and media centers throughout the district are embracing the Future Ready Libraries model. Its creators are back with an expanded idea and have joined a new team with plans to design a mobile maker lab.

The media is invited to learn more about the mobile maker lab and other exciting projects at the R2 Innovates Teams Showcase Drop-In on Wednesday, March 28 from 5 - 7 p.m. in C212 of the student center at R2i2, located at 763 Fashion Drive, 29229.

Other teams are working on projects tackling topics as varied as leveraging virtual tools to allow schools more flexibility in class scheduling to establishing nature preserves on school campuses to increase students’ exposure to nature and wildlife.

Since its inception five years ago, R2 Innovates has given all district staff the opportunity to grow great ideas into reality. The district provides teams accepted into the incubator time, meeting space and other amenities to scrutinize and develop their ideas. Successful incubator projects include Si Se Puede whose mission is to extend efforts to equip staff and empower families, ensuring Latino student success. Initiatives included training front desk staff to create an inclusive environment, conversational Spanish classes for staff and student interpreters. Si Se Puede translates to “Yes, you can!” or “You can do it!”
