PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS STATE AWARD

12/1/2021

Michael Lally, physical education teacher at Lake Carolina Elementary School – Upper Campus, is the 2021 recipient of the South Carolina Association for Physical Education and Sport Elementary Teacher of the Year. He was officially recognized in November at an annual conference in Myrtle Beach held by South Carolina Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (SCAHPERD).

SCAHPERD Executive Director Kym Kirby says Lally will represent the organization as a candidate for the Southern District SHAPE Elementary Teacher of the Year award. “Mr. Lally exemplifies qualities of an outstanding teacher and professional and consistently provides a quality physical education program for his students at Lake Carolina,” Kirby said.

Lally says he is honored to be recognized with such a prestigious award but the highest honor comes through his interactions with children. “The real award I receive is when a student has the light bulb go on when grasping a skill for the first time.  Being recognized by my peers and physical educators that I admire is the icing on the cake,” said Lally.

Jeff Williams, principal of Lake Carolina Upper, is pleased with how Lally connects with his students. “He understands how to establish a learning objective for his students and makes sure that each child is successfully able to meet that objective by the end of class.”

Lally began his educational career in 2005 at Round Top Elementary School in Richland Two. He earned Teacher of the Year honors in 2010-2011 while teaching physical education at Round Top.
