Richland Two November 13, 2018 School Board Meeting Highlights

At 5:30 p.m., after calling the meeting to order, the Richland Two Board of Trustees convened in executive session to discuss student appeals and student admission requests to the district's adult education program. Public session resumed at 6:30 p.m.
 

Special Recognitions

Allen Kendall Wallace from Blythewood High School was selected to compete in the PURE Insurance Golf Championship in Pebble Beach, California.

Richland Two Institute of Innovation (R2i2) students were named a 2018-2019 InvenTeam by the Lemelson-MIT Program. Students are M’Chaelah (Kay) Brown, Andrea Cerda, Ronnie Fowler, Omar Herrera, Jeremiah Lynch, Murray McDaniel, Nithin Saravanapandian, Anaiah Thompson, Laila Thompson. Mentors are Kirstin Bullington, Nicolas Jones and Robin Jones.

R2i2 teacher Kirstin Bullington won the TM Floyd Top Innovator Award in the 2018 IT-ology Innovation Challenge.

Summit Parkway Middle School lead teacher Debbie Bernhagen received the 2018 S.C. Association for Physical Education and Sport (SCAPES) Teacher of the Year Award – Middle School Physical Education Level.

Shaina Manuel from Round Top Elementary School won first place in the Professional Drawing Division at the 2018 South Carolina State Fair.

The Building Occupational Opportunities in the Midlands (BOOM) program was selected as the recipient of the 2018 Outstanding Continuing Education Cooperative Program and the Outstanding Program of the Year. Those recognized were Sarah Park, Blythewood High School; Joan Yacobi, Dent Middle School; Stan Beckley, BMC; Vince Earls, Midlands Technical College; Laura Spears, S.C. Vocational Rehabilitation Department and Samantha Turner from MEBA.
 

School Focus

Jeaneen Tucker, principal of Round Top Elementary, shared with the board information about the school's fifth-grade leadership class.
 

Voting Items

Consent Agenda The Board approved the Consent Agenda, which included the minutes from the meeting on October 23.

Executive Session Items — The Board approved motions related to student appeals.

Policy Revisions — The Board approved changes to Policies IKF (Graduation Requirements), IHAM (Health Education), IHAE (Physical Education) and DKC (Expense Authorization Reimbursements).

SCSBA’s 2018 Delegate Assembly — The board voted Cheryl Caution-Parker, James Shadd and James Manning (alternate) to serve as delegates at the 2018 Delegate SCSBA Legislative Assembly.

Bond Referendum Result Declaration — The board voted to adopt the resolution declaring the results of the referendum held on November 6, 2018 on the questions of the issuance of not exceeding $468,406 general obligation bonds of school district no. 2 of Richland County, South Carolina.

Legislative Update — Board member Jamie Shadd presented the board with a summary of related legislative information.

Policy Revisions — The Board received proposed changes to Board Policies EBAB (Hazardous Materials) and EDE (Energy Conservation).

Budget Update — The district’s Chief Financial Officer Dr. Harry Miley presented the board the 1st Quarter Financial Statement.
 

The board reconvened in Executive Session to discuss to discuss student appeals and student admission requests to the district's adult education program.
