More paid work experiences are coming to students ages 16 and over in Richland School District Two. Thanks to the new PremieR2Career partnership with the City of Columbia, students will get opportunities to work in various departments within the city to gain valuable work experience and earn money while doing so. Officials with the district and City of Columbia formally announced the partnership Wednesday and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will last from January 2023 through January 2025.

Jenniferr Cain is the Director of College and Career Initiatives for Richland Two. “The partnership will give students the opportunity to participate in mock job interviews and receive feedback from Human Resources personnel, in preparation for actual job interviews. This joint effort will also support job readiness for current and future potential employment opportunities for our students,” said Cain.

Initially, students who receive job offers through the MOU will obtain five months of employment from January 2023 to May 2023. Students can work up to 120 hours, Monday through Friday between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. The MOU extends through 2025 and will provide internship opportunities for future students as well.

Dr. Tiniece Javis, Director of Human Resources for the City of Columbia, says this partnership will provide necessary training for students while assisting them in filling a vast variety of government positions in the future. “This partnership is an opportunity of a lifetime to give young people a chance to work in areas of interest while teaching them soft skills that most employers want like how to problem-solve, communicate, critically think, and how to be team players with great attitudes. Being able to earn money while gaining on-the-job experience makes this partnership that much more attractive,” said Dr. Javis.
The PremieR2Career partnership seeks to provide well-supervised, well-structured and meaningful work experience; and to increase participants’ knowledge of and experience with proper work habits.
