May 22 Board Meeting Highlights


Richland Two May 22, 2018 School Board Meeting Highlights

At 5:00 p.m., after calling the meeting to order, the Richland Two Board of Trustees held a public hearing on the 2018-2019 General Fund Budget. At 5:30 p.m., the board convened in executive session to discuss student expulsions; student appeals; student admission request into the district’s Adult Education Program; readmission requests into the district for the 2018-2019 school year; a contractual matter regarding contract extension; employment recommendations; and employment releases and in-district transfers. Public session resumed at 6:30 p.m.

Special Recognitions

The Richland Northeast High Model United Nations team won the first place Award of Distinction at the National High School Model U.N. conference for the 29th time. Team members include Kevin Cao, William Cason, Hannah Cross, Caleb Daniels, Wade Fletcher, Andrea Kimpson, Savanna King, Scott Moore, Max Petersen, Audrey Royal, Hayle Turner, Aditya Valluri and Annelisa Walters. Advisers are Samantha Rainwater and Marques Ardoin.

Malika Lightbourne from Ridge View High won the Gold Medal on the 2018 National Spanish Exam.

Ridge View High students Keianna Benson and Kaylan Cooper won first place in Business Law and Ethics Team Decision Making at the State DECA competition. Longtime advisor Pat Jackson was named an Honorary Life Member of DECA and received the DECA Advisor’s Award for South Carolina.

Ridge View High students Iyanna Chapman, Miranda Hurt and Faith Thompson won first place in Creative Problem Solving at the State HOSA competition.

Ridge View High’s Victoria Jackson was inducted into the Terry McCoy Student Council Hall of Fame, and Ridge View High Student Council received the Gold Honor Council Award. 

Richland Northeast High’s Justin Castro was inducted into the Terry McCoy Student Council Hall of Fame.

Westwood High students Hailey Zalewa, Deskychun Davis, Jewel Dinkins, Alyssa Maul and Arianna Wilson won top awards and recognition from the S.C. Association of Student Councils. Avé Parker and Jewel Dinkins won first place awards from the Southern Association of Student Councils.    

The Ridge View High Girls Track and Field team won the 4A Track and Field State Championship. Team members include: Alliyah Brooks, Mekayla Brown, Johnaida Eliscar, LaNaya Martin, Aaliyah Morgan, Elisabeth Whitemore and Trinity Yates.

In addition, Alliyah Brooks, Johnaida Elisca, LaNaya Martin and Aaliyah Morgan won the 4x400 Meter Relay. The team is coached by Warren Eure, who has been named the S.C. Track and Cross Country Coaches Association AAAA State Coach of the Year.

Ridge View High’s boys track and field’s Tyler Mitchell won the Boys 200 Meter Dash. 

Shani’a Bellamy from Richland Northeast High won the 4A state title in the Girls 400 Meter Hurdles.

Blythewood High’s Robert Braswell won the 5A state title in the Boys High Jump.

Westwood High’s Kayla Racine won first place in the 4A Discus Throw.

Westwood High’s Boys Track and Field Team had many first place finishes in the state 4A meet.  Montre Miller, Torran Goings and Christan Horn won the 4x100 and 4x400 Meter Relays.  Jalen Briggman, Dermonti Romey and Trini Feggett won the 4x100 Meter Relay.  Malik Donald, Paul McCants and Rayshawn Floyd won the 4x400 Meter Relay.    

The Westwood High School Athletic Department won the Award of Excellence in Sportsmanship, Integrity and Ethics by the S.C. High School League.  This is the 2nd year in a row and the third time in the last four years the school won this award.      


Voting Items

Consent Agenda — The Board approved the Consent Agenda that included the minutes from the meetings on May 8; employment recommendations, releases and in-district transfers/promotions; and authorization for the superintendent to apply for available state, federal, foundation and other special funded programs for the coming fiscal year

Executive Session Items — The Board voted on items from executive session including employment recommendations; student appeals; student admission request into the district’s Adult Education Program; readmission requests into the district for the 2018-2019 school year; and contractual matter regarding contract extension.

 Policy Revisions — The Board approved changes to Board Policy GCC/GDC (Employee Personal Leaves and Absences).

2018-2019 General Fund Budget — On the second reading, the Board approved the General Fund Budget for 2018-2019 school year.

Governance Committee Recommendation — The Board approved the recommendation of the Governance Committee.

10-Year Facility Plan — The Board adopted the 10-Year Facility Plan.

No-Action Requested Items

Policy Revisions — The Board received proposed changes to Policy KFB (Community use of District Conference Facility).

Policy Report — The Board heard a report on Policy GBEA (Conflict of Interest/Staff Ethics).

Magnet Report — The Board heard a report on the district’s magnet programs from Dawne Whitley, Director of Academic Initiatives. Ms. Whitley also honored our award winning magnet programs: Academy of Civic Engagement at Lonnie B. Nelson; Center for Knowledge and Center for Knowledge North; The Learning Collaborative, the TWO Academies and Fine Arts Media Enrichment at Dent Middle; INC Magnet at Kelly Mill Middle; Discovery and Explorations Programs at Spring Valley High; RNE Baccalaureate World School; Forest Lake NASA Explorer School and The Elementary Learning Collaborative at Forest Lake.
