Richland Two June 12, 2018 School Board Meeting Highlights

At 5:30 p.m., after calling the meeting to order, the Richland Two Board of Trustees convened in executive session to discuss a legal matter regarding transportation; personnel matter; student expulsions; student appeals; student readmission requests; employment recommendations; and employment releases and in-district transfers. Public session resumed at 6:30 p.m.

Special Recognitions

Blythewood High School Student Abhimanyu Sailesh won the first place for Environmental Science Paper at the S.C. Junior Academy of Science Written Research Paper and Oral Presentation Competition.

Seven Spring Valley High School students won Gold Medals on the 2018 National Spanish Exam. They are Ethan Goodman, Elyse Gregg, Abby Kim, Isak Jatoi, Allison Stanek, Kristina Trifonova and Alyssa Williams.

Ridge View High School won first place at the Palmetto State Choral Competition. Directed by Erin Phillips, students include Myia Bacon, Caleb Cunningham, Je’von Fickling, Diamond Gaston, Jaye Gibson, Alyssa Gonzalez, Naysia Green, Bernard Hasan, Kiara Hayes, Kamryn Jones, Byron Latimore, Yazmine Latimore, Gabriel McFarlan, Jasmine Nelson, Jocelynne Pagan, Caia Roberts-Jones, Teyden Smalls, Karl Vogl, Christofer Wheeler and Stephanie Wiggins.

Polo Road Elementary School Nurse Betsy Salcedo was named Richland Two RN of the Year.

R2i2 Teacher Kirstin Bullington is the recipient of the Lemelson-MIT Excite Award.

Lake Carolina Elementary Lower won the Whole Child Award from the S.C. Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.

Muller Road Middle was named an AVID Site of Distinction and a National Beta School of Merit.

Voting Items

Consent Agenda — The Board approved the Consent Agenda that included the minutes from the meetings on May 22; the monthly technology report; and employment recommendations, releases and in-district transfers/promotions.

Executive Session Items — The Board voted on items from executive session including employment recommendations; student appeals; and student readmission requests.

Policy Revisions — The Board approved to table Board Policy Policy KFB (Community use of District Conference Facility) until further information is provided.

SCSBA Region 8 Director Nomination: The Board approved the nomination of Board Member Amelia McKie as the S.C. School Board Association Region 8 Director.

No-Action Requested Items

Legislative Update — Board Member Amelia McKie updated the board on the legislative schedule.

Policy Proposals — The Board received proposed changes to Policies DD (Funding Proposals, Grants and Special Projects [NEW]), DDA (Federal Fiscal Compliance [NEW]), IHBF (Homebound Instruction, GBEA (Conflict of Interest/Staff Ethics), BCB (Board Member Conflict of Interest), and CF (Hiring of School Principals/ Building Administrators).

Financial Report — The Board heard a report on the Third Quarter Financials from Chief Financial Officer Dr. Harry Miley.
