HISTORY SCHOLAR GETS TOP TEACHING AWARD
HISTORY SCHOLAR GETS TOP TEACHING AWARD
4/2/2021
Dent Middle School teacher, Dr. Timothy E. Hicks, is the 2021 State Outstanding Teacher of American History.
The South Carolina Daughters of the American Revolution (SCDAR) selected Dr. Hicks as this year’s winner. He was nominated by Columbia's William Capers Chapter, one of 68 SCDAR chapters in the state.
“The SCDAR is an outstanding organization of women who promote historic preservation, help and honor our veterans, and support education. With so many great teachers out there, I feel honored to have been selected,” said Dr. Hicks.
Dr. Hicks is a nationally-board certified teacher who has taught for more than 26 years in The Learning Collaborative (TLC) magnet program at Dent. His classroom instruction emphasizes the analysis of primary sources and off-campus/virtual field studies.
Dent Middle School Principal Tamala Ashford describes Dr. Hicks as a very conscientious teacher who goes above and beyond to plan lessons that are engaging and meet the learning levels represented by his students. “He emphasizes the use of primary sources, incorporates field trips to historical sites, and uses research and high levels of discussion in the classroom,” Ashford said.
SCDAR members presented the state award to Dr. Hicks at a luncheon held in March in North Charleston. He is now in the running for National Outstanding Teacher of American History, which will be announced later this spring.
A graduate of Furman University, Dr. Hicks earned a Bachelor of Arts in History degree. At the University of South Carolina, he earned a Master of Arts in Teaching History and a Doctorate of Education in Curriculum and Instruction.
