Farm2School event at Windsor Elementary School

10/21/2016

Windsor Elementary School students will learn how the food they eat in the cafeteria gets there during a Farm2School event on Friday, Oct. 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is sponsored by Sodexo, Richland School District Two’s food service partner. October is also National Farm to School Month.

The Windsor cafeteria will be transformed into a carnival-like atmosphere, featuring booths that promote good nutrition. Students, staff and invited guests will be introduced to many healthy foods and take part in fun and interactive presentations designed to teach students that what they put into their bodies, and the amount they exercise, will greatly influence their degree of health and wellness throughout their lives. The goal is to have students learn some tips to help them make sound health and nutrition choices at school, at home and when they are out with friends.

“Children are naturally curious about how things come to be. This fun festival-like event is a great opportunity to get them thinking about where our food comes from,” said Sodexo Wellness Coordinator Joseph Altman. “It’s equally important that we’re talking to children at an early age about the importance of healthy eating habits and exercise.”

In Richland Two, Sodexo serves more than 2.6 million student lunches and 1.1 million student breakfasts each year. More than 25 percent of the produce and products served in district schools comes from local vendors.

The Farm2School event will immediately follow Windsor’s We Pink We Can, cancer awareness walk which begins at 9 a.m. The media is invited to attend both. Windsor is located at 9800 Dunbarton Drive, Columbia, 29223.
