FOREST LAKE ELEMENTARY STUDENTS WIN STATE JUNIOR BETA CLUB COMPETITIONS

1/26/2023

A group of Forest Lake Elementary NASA Explorer School fifth-graders came home winners earlier this month from the South Carolina Junior Beta Club Convention in Myrtle Beach. Ten students won their competitions in the Spelling Bee, Musicology, Academics and Visual Arts categories.

Amelia Kamoroff is the Spelling Bee champion. She had to first complete an online multiple choice spelling test. Kamoroff was among the Top 8 students to advance to the oral rounds and ultimately won the spelling challenge.

The champions in Musicology are Harper Allen, Layla Clayton, Benjamin Felder, and Angel Ragin. Musicology is a general knowledge music competition that uses questions and videos that cover various aspects and genres of music. The competition is designed for a team of four students to participate and stresses collaboration and quick recall.

In Academics, Sean Bruton won for Language Arts, Aivery Cherry for Social Studies and Lydia Watts for Science. These students took a 45-minute online multiple-choice test and received the highest scores in their subject areas. In the Visual Arts competition, Ella Pigeon won in the Jewelry category and Tajuan Smith won for Online Drawing.

These students will have an opportunity to compete at the National Convention in June in Louisville, Kentucky. Beta Club sponsors at Forest Lake are teachers Tierra Williams, Amy Smith, and Najla Clayton.

Forest Lake Elementary NASA Explorer School is located at 6801 Brookfield Road, Columbia, SC 29206.
