FLAGSHIP UNIVERSITY RECOGNIZES DISTRICT FIELD SERVICES INSTRUCTOR

7/24/2020

Richland Two Family Intervention Services Counselor Thomas Smith has been named the 2019-2020 BSW Field Instructor of the Year by the University of South Carolina (UofSC) College of Social Work. According to the UofSC, as a field instructor, Smith has provided excellent on-site supervision, advisement, and instruction to Bachelor of Social Work degree students, while promoting their development of social work skills, abilities, values and ethics. Smith’s one-on-one mentoring and coaching to undergraduate students in the field practicum has helped them translate classroom learning into real-world practice.

The BSW Field Instructor of the Year award is presented annually to a supervisor of a bachelor’s-level social work intern. Smith says interns are the future of the profession and he’s proud to help in their training.

“I am honored to receive recognition from the UofSC College of Social Work. Our interns provide an invaluable service to us and the students we serve in Family Intervention Services, and those from the College of Social Work have been a joy and a privilege to work with,” said Smith. “My work in Richland Two truly is a team effort, and any good I bring to interns is multiplied by the team’s dedication and experience.”

Dr. Shirley Vickery is the Executive Director of Learning Support Services in Richland Two. “Mr. Smith is an extremely effective supervisor, and that increases our ability to provide quality services to Richland Two families. I give him my special thanks for investing in this kind of work, which pays off for students, families, future social workers and therapists,” said Dr. Vickery.

Richland Two’s Family Intervention Services provides an array of services to students with discipline and behavioral issues and their families. Services include family therapy, individual counseling, multi-family groups, peer group therapy, and training for schools and other community representatives.
