ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS SHARPEN THEIR SKILLS IN COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING
5/19/2022
Zoey Sangla, Laurie Lewis and Peyton Montgomery
Two elementary students who teamed up outside of school to sharpen their skills in computer science and engineering are being recognized with a state award. Fourth graders Zoey Sangal and Peyton Montgomery are the Overall Winners in the Robotics Challenge for the 2022 South Carolina 4-H Engineering Challenge. Sangal attends the Center for Knowledge and Montgomery is a student at Round Top Elementary School. The Robotics team winners received training at The STEM Lab by STEM For Kids in Richland County.
Now in its eighth year, the 4-H Engineering Challenge aims to raise student interest in science, technology, engineering and math and allow students to experience various STEM disciplines while competing against their peers from across the state.
Gaurav Sangal is President of STEM For Kids. “The goal of our STEM programs is to train the students for the careers of the future. Our cutting-edge programs train students in Robotics, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, Rocket Engineering, Game Design, App Design, Electrical Engineering, and much more. These programs encourage students to work together in a fun environment to develop skills like critical thinking, communication, and collaboration while increasing confidence, and knowledge in science,” Sangal said.
South Carolina 4-H, the youth development arm of Clemson Cooperative Extension, offers the Engineering Challenge event annually to youth ages 5-18. The event offers opportunities for both teams and individuals in seven different challenge areas: Bridge Building, Lego Robotics, Mystery, Rocketry, Coding, Visual Arts, and STEAM Fair.
