E.L. Wright wins 9th Annual Quiz Whiz

3/11/2019

Do you know which world leader in a 1946 speech at Westminster College in Missouri, warned of an “iron curtain” descending on Europe? How about, in which U.S. city is the tallest tower named the “Batman Building?” If you answered Winston Churchill and Nashville, you are right. The answers to these and other questions came easy for Richland Two students competing in the ninth annual Quiz Whiz Middle School Academic Tournament. Quiz Whiz is similar to the National Academic Quiz Tournament and is not a game of trivia. The rigorous, pyramid-style questions focus on academics in subjects including, history, literature, science, fine arts, current events, and sports.

E. L. Wright Middle School, coached by Maria Carter, won the competition finishing with six match wins and one loss to Dent Middle School, the same team they defeated in the championship round. Dent, coached by Cathy Stinson and Marc Turner, won six games, with their only loss to E. L. Wright. The loss ended Dent’s streak of three consecutive tournament wins.

The tournament was held Feb. 22-23, 2019 at the Richland Two Institute of Innovation (R2i2) located at 763 Fashion Drive, Columbia. Matches will be aired on R2TV, Spectrum Cable channel 1303 in the Northeast Columbia area, with episodes of new rounds each week.

Previous tournament winners are Dent Middle School (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018), E. L. Wright Middle School (2012, 2019), Kelly Mill Middle School (2011) and Summit Parkway Middle School (2013, 2015).
