DISTRICT RECEIVES WHOLE CHILD INITIATIVE GRANT

10/5/2020

Richland School District Two is excited to announce its recent awarding of a $1,000,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA). Fifteen schools and approximately 1,245 military-connected students will benefit from The Whole Child Initiative grant. This grant will provide college and career ready resources necessary to successfully build and/or expand the district’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programming.

Over the next four and a half years the grant will serve students at the Center for Achievement, Center for Inquiry, Bethel-Hanberry Elementary, Bookman Road Elementary, Bridge Creek Elementary, Catawba Trail Elementary, Killian Elementary, Lake Carolina Elementary (Upper & Lower Campuses), Langford Elementary, Rice Creek Elementary, Round Top Elementary, Sandlapper Elementary, Blythewood Middle and Muller Road Middle.

"These funds will provide premier opportunities for our children across Richland School District Two," stated Dr. Arlene Bakutes, Project Director. “The overall goal is to increase academic outcomes in math for elementary and middle school students.”

According to the Committee on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Education of the National Science and Technology Council, it is critical to our national security that students spark interest in critical and fast-growing careers in STEM and our PreK-12 education system is poised to increase and sustain student engagement in STEM.

The DoDEA awarded $22 million across 21 grants as part of its 2020 Cohort. These grants will serve more than 100,000 students across 13 states.
