CALL ME MISTER COHORTS TO VOLUNTEER IN RICHLAND TWO SCHOOLS

2/5/2020

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Richland School District Two will host its first Call Me MISTER Hill Day at Richland Two on Tuesday, February 11, 2020. Call Me MISTER Cohorts from 20 chapters in South Carolina will participate in a day of service in Richland Two elementary schools. Call Me MISTER students will begin arriving at schools around 10:15 a.m. and will board buses to return to the district office at R2i2 at 12:30 p.m.

The mission of the Call Me MISTER® (an acronym for Mentors Instructing Students Toward Effective Role Models) program is to increase the pool of available teachers from a broader, more diverse background particularly among the state's lowest-performing elementary schools. Student participants are largely selected from among underserved, socio-economically disadvantaged and educationally at-risk communities.

The partnership with the Call Me MISTER program is part of the district’s Premier 100 Initiative to increase recruitment and retention of male teachers of color. About six percent of Richland Two’s teachers are male and minority. However, nationwide that number drops to less than 2 percent, despite the fact that the percentage of students of color continues to rise. There is staggering data addressing the immediate need for minority males serving in the classrooms as teachers, mentors and role models. The district is holding the first Premier 100 on conference March 28, 2020 to continue the conversation on this important topic.
