BHE TEACHER NAMED JANUARY ROOKIE TEACHER OF THE BLOCK

2/7/2020

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Bethel-Hanberry Elementary School’s Tiarah Canzater has been named the January Rookie Teacher of the Block. The award is sponsored by H&R Block, a dedicated partner of Richland School District Two.
Canzater’s second grade classroom is well-managed and her expectations for learning and conduct are high. She knows that an uncomfortable student is a distracted and an unproductive student, so the incorporation of flexible seating encourages the students in her class to find their best seating type and location in order to stay calm, focused, and productive. She is committed to helping her students be healthy, mind and body.
“In addition, Ms. Canzater’s students feel like the classroom is theirs and not just hers,” said Bethel-Hanberry Principal Tracy Footman. “The students are able to display a sense of ownership, which has made them more invested in their own learning.”
Having a variety of high, medium and low seating to choose from has helped students in Ms. Canzater’s class strive toward becoming their best learning selves. Her awareness of the correlation of physical health and movement to higher academic performance, better health and improved behavior is evident in her classroom design and approach.
RTOTB winners receive a plaque to hang outside their door, a Kindle Fire for their personal use and a unique trophy designed by the 3D Printing class at the Richland Two Institute of Innovation (R2i2). Winners from the 2019-2020 school year include Jessica Grice (Richland School District Two Center for Knowledge-North), James Roberts IV (Westwood High School) and William Melven (Sandlapper Elementary School).
