August 22 School Board Meeting Highlights

At 6:30 p.m. after calling the meeting to order, the Board convened in executive session to discuss student readmission requests, student admission requests into the district’s Adult Education program, reclassification of employment, personnel recommendations, releases and in-district transfers. At 7 p.m., the Board reconvened in public session. 
 
Special Recognitions
Three Richland Two school board members were recognized by the S.C. School Boards Association for attaining new levels in the association’s Boardmanship Institute. Dr. Monica Elkins-Johnson has reached Level Five, and Lindsay Agostini and James Shadd have reached Level Two.
 
Windsor United Methodist Church was recognized with a Community Partner certificate for being awarded the 2017 Barbara Boultinghouse Bridge Builders Award from the South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church.
 
Ms. Willie Dell Grimes was recognized for earning her high school diploma at age 83. Despite many setbacks, she was determined to obtain her diploma.
 
Voting Item: Consent Agenda
The Board voted to approve the Consent Agenda that included the minutes from the previous meeting; student readmission requests; student admission requests into the district’s Adult Education program; and personnel recommendations, releases and in-district transfers/promotions.
 
Update: Summer Food Program
Lead Social Worker Abby Cobb presented a report on the Summer Food Program. A total of 33,857 meals were served to students at various schools and three community sites including Hunter’s Way Apartments, Freeway Mobile Home Park, and Palmetto Palms Mobile Home Park. Volunteers engaged students at the community sites in several fun activities.

Policy Revisions
The board received for review proposed changes to policies and administrative rules: IKA (Grading/Assessment Systems), BEDH (Public Participation at Board Meetings), BEDI (News Media Services at Board Meetings), BEDL (Board Members and Electronic Communications), BEDM (Electronic Participation in Board Meetings), BEDN (Board Members' Use of District-Owned Portable Devices), BG/BGD (Board Policy Process/Board Review of Administrative Rules), BHC (Board/Staff Communications), and BK (Board Membership in Professional Associations)
