AVID GRADUATES ARRIVE AT COLLEGE PREPARED

One hundred percent of Richland Two Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program class of 2019 graduates met four-year college entrance requirements, according to information recently released by AVID. AVID is a nationally recognized program that prepares students to successfully pursue college and career opportunities after high school.

“We are so proud of these students and their teachers for this achievement,” said District Superintendent Dr. Baron R. Davis. “We know that college students who take AP classes, even if they earned a score of 2, outperform students who don’t take AP courses at all. These students have higher GPAs and their college completion rate is higher.”

Seventy-three percent of Richland Two class of 2019 AVID graduates took at least one Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) or Advanced International Certificate of Education course (AICE). Sixty-nine percent of those high school seniors sat for at least one AP exam, compared to the national rate of 39 percent.

Richland Two became an AVID school district at the start of the 2019-2020 school year. The goal is to increase all students’ access to rigorous academic courses. Studies have shown that participation in AP coursework and exams have a positive impact on a student’s high school GPA, college acceptance and retention, and eligibility to receive scholarships.
