3/22/2017

A group of Richland Two ALERT students flexed their engineering skills at a recent competition in Charleston.

Five gifted and talented students formed the Richland 2 ALERT Fire Flingers and participated in the Hoplite division of Storm the Citadel. The team was tasked with building a trebuchet from a kit. The trebuchet then had to be able to safely and accurately launch a small rubber ball to accurately hit a target set 10-20 feet away.

The students were Addison Sussman, Aaliyah Kee-Sanfeliz and Tripp Whitaker from Bookman Road Elementary School and Evalyn Kinney and Walker Miro from Lonnie B. Nelson Elementary School. They were assisted by Elementary Gifted Specialist Sheri Barfield and mentor and parent Ryon Miro, a graduate of The Citadel School of Engineering.

The Richland 2 ALERT Fire Flingers were among the more than 40 teams from across South Carolina to participate in the event which was sponsored by Google and Boeing
