Middle School Magnets

In 1991 Richland Two introduced its first magnet, The Learning Collaborative (TLC), a program for motivated and high-achieving students at Dent Middle School. Over the course of the past 20 years, the magnet offerings have grown to 39 unique and dynamic programs aimed at engaging all types of learners. 

For more information including frequently asked questions and a schedule of school information nights, please visit the Choice Program page. Using the online Choice Application, parents may apply each January and May for placement that will take effect the following school year.

 

You may see emblems beside some magnet programs and/or centers name. These programs have been recognized by Magnet Schools of America. Here is a guideline to each emblem:

National Demonstration Schools LogoDent Middle School

Fine Arts Media Literacy Program (FAME): All students at Dent Middle School have an opportunity to participate in the FAME program through their co-curricular class time. Sixth grade students will explore many of the FAME areas. At the end of the sixth grade year, these students will choose an arts major that they will follow throughout the rest of their years at Dent.

The Learning Collaborative (TLC) serves high-achieving and highly motivated students by immersing them in a rigorous, intellectually stimulating academic environment. The foundation of TLC is the emphasis on higher order thinking through the integration of the academic disciplines. With additional focus on skills-based instruction and student collaboration, this program challenges students to become engaged, reflective learners in a community-centered atmosphere.

TWO Academies: Single Gender Program: Learning in a single-gender environment will reduce the pressures of the middle school years, as well as provide a rich educational opportunity while defining the unique genius of your child. This magnet program boasts a rigorous curriculum, filled with hands-on learning activities.

National Demonstration Schools Logo E.L. Wright Middle School

EL Wright, an International Baccalaureate World School is designed to help students find a sense of belonging in the ever changing and increasingly interrelated world around them and to foster a positive attitude to learning.

The Leadership Academy at Wright (LAW) couples the rigor of the Core Knowledge Curriculum with an emphasis on leadership skills to create an innovative academic program that meets the needs of average and above-average students.

National Demonstration Schools LogoKelly Mill Middle School 

Kelly Mill, INC.: Kelly Mill, INC. is a district magnet program geared toward honors and advanced students. INC. offers a unique middle school experience, engaging students with broader and deeper depth of content, fast pacing, and an embedded global business and economics strand. INC. teachers seek to strengthen students’ abilities to think inventively, solve problems, communicate, research, and create finished products. The curriculum is designed to equip students with the skills necessary for leadership and success in their chosen career field. INC. focuses on 21st Century Skills, basic knowledge of economics, and sound reasoning skills. Students in the program learn about personal finance, economics, and ethical business practices to prepare them to become leaders who will guide, create, and meet the challenges of a competitive world.

Med Pro Magnet School: Empowering students to value learning via a STEAM+Medical perspective is the cornerstone of education at Kelly Mill Med Pro Middle School.  Students collaborate through inquiry-based activities to explore elements of science, technology, engineering, the arts, mathematics, medical and health science with state standards and curriculum. The STEAM+Medical theme is integrated into all classes encouraging students to make connections and apply their learning in different contexts. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) supports the magnet's theme with learning strategies, study skills, and access to college and career exploration. Beginning with the 2021-2022 school year, all students will have access to the Kelly Mill Med Pro Middle STEAMM Makerspace where students will engage in hands-on learning and grade-level projects.  The schoolwide STEAMM focus is balanced by the “7 Mindsets” character education program for building social and emotional skills, helping our students to become healthy and lifelong learners. 

Longleaf Middle School

The School for Zoological and Botanical Studies (ZooBot) magnet program provides relevant, real-world and rigorous learning opportunities for students to explore the natural world, develop an appreciation and respect for living things and the environment, while deepening and sharpening their research and data-analysis skills to advocate and elicit change locally, nationally and globally.

Longleaf Engineering Arts Program (LEAP): Longleaf recognizes the need to prepare students for a rapidly changing world. In response, we have engineered our curriculum to focus thinking on problem solving as our students are immersed in the concepts of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math.

Muller Road Middle School

Leadership Academy @ Muller Road is an innovative academic program with a strong integration and emphasis on developing and cultivating leaders. The Leadership Academy provides a rigorous honor-level curriculum based on E.D. Hirsch's Core Knowledge with an emphasis on school, community, and global leadership skills called Core Competencies.

Summit Parkway Middle School

The STEM Institute of Design and Innovation (SIDI) provides opportunities for students to explore STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) topics and careers in a rigorous and engaging curriculum geared toward students eager to achieve. Design thinking and innovation are infused in classes, allowing students to develop their problem-solving skills by participating in learning experiences relevant to real life.    

The goal of The Academy of Exercise Physiology and Sports Medicine is to prepare our students to pursue careers related to the support of healthy lifestyles and to guide students in becoming role models for exemplary health and wellness.

Site Alert

As announced in December, Richland Two schools have temporarily shifted to eLearning for all students from Jan. 4–15, 2021. This means all students will participate in eLearning following their school’s current bell schedule.

The district will observe the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday, Monday, Jan. 18, 2021. In-person instruction for students who selected classroom communities or hybrid models for Phase 2 will resume on Jan. 19, 2021.
