About MED at BCE
MED at BCE is a school-wide magnet funded by a five-year grant, STEAMM MedPro21, through the Magnet Schools Assistance Program (MSAP). We use Project Based Learning to teach key academic content, practice 21st Century Skills (including collaboration, communication, and critical thinking), and to create high-quality authentic products and presentations. We also utilize AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) strategies, including organization and WICOR, to prepare students for college. At MED at BCE, we offer students hands-on exploration using case-studies in a fully functioning Medical Lab. Our students also experience the Engineering Design Process in our Engineering Lab. We have expanded the Arts program to include new instruments, dance, and art media.
In partnership with our community, we work to develop the global citizens of tomorrow—citizens who are prepared to lead and excel in their chosen pathway.
Every Child, Every Chance, Every Day—Partnering with our community to invest in every child by providing diverse opportunities to succeed through Medical, Engineering, and Arts immersion.
STEAMM Med Pro 21 is a K-12 continuum of rigorous instruction and learning which integrates innovative Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math and Medical activities aligning to state standards and core content. When students enroll in a STEAMM Med Pro 21 school they enter into a path of excellence which includes: hands-on curriculum, 21st-century skills, community partnerships, exposure to medical based careers and a clear pathway to college and careers.
Acceptance into MED at BCE
At MED at BCE, we believe that all students will benefit from participating in our magnet school. Students in grades K-5 with expressed interests in science, medicine, health, engineering, and arts would benefit from participating in our program. This is a rigorous, unique program that is designed using the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. Apply online via the district website. Selection will be made by random lottery.
Special Campus Features
M: At MED at BCE, we have a classroom that has been transformed into a Medical Lab where students will begin their journey into the medical field of studies. Human skeletal systems and anatomical models are used to make the connection for students to their own bodies. The Medical Lab also features an authentic medical simulator that is used with our case-study based curriculum that is aligned to the South Carolina Health and Wellness and Science Standards.
E: We also have a fully operating Engineering Lab. All MED at BCE students will experience the Engineering Design Process through the Engineering is Elementary (EiE) Curriculum developed by the Boston Museum of Science. We also offer Lego robotics and a fully stocked Makerspace where students have an opportunity to explore their own interests; learn to use tools and materials, both physical and virtual; and develop creative projects.
D: There is a strong link between academic achievement and the Arts. Research has shown that what students learn in the arts may help them to master other subjects, such as reading, math or social studies. Students at MED at BCE will have access to instruction on the steel pans, ukuleles, boomwhackers, dance, and art mediums.
