Vikings to Attend  

National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium   

 Thirteen Spring Valley Discovery students presented research papers to the 2012 Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) awards competition on January 20, 2012, at the University of South Carolina.  A total of 69 papers were presented at the symposium which was attended by 176 students from 32 high schools throughout the midlands of South Carolina.    

Nine Spring Valley presentations were among the 17 selected for semifinal consideration to compete for the opportunity to attend National JSHS in Bethesda, Maryland (all expenses paid):  

The nine Vikings earning semifinal consideration were:    

Jordan Byrne    Meghan Franco    Shannon Hall   
Afia Khan    DJ Lee    Joseph Marazzo   
Courtney Noh    David Qu    Rana Sobeih   

 

Shannon Hall won 2nd place overall and will present her research in Bethesda at the May 2nd-6th national conference;   

Joseph Marazzo won 4th place overall and will attend the conference as an observer, and DJ Lee won 6th place.  

The following students presented in non-semifinalist sessions and received the following placements in that category:

 Congratulations to all of the Spring Valley High School band students who auditioned for Region Band on Saturday, January 7 and those who attended the call-back audition on Saturday, January 21, 2012. Congratulations to the students, their parents, and their teachers -- Mr. Allison and Mr. Humber!

SVHS Art Students were highly successful in getting the their works shown at the South Carolina Scholastic Art Competition at Lander University.  Three of our student artists were named to represent the state at the national competition.

 This is our BIG community event and major source of revenue for the programs the SVEF supports. It includes a Live Auction, Silent Auction, Grab Bags, Celebrity Items, great food, and a crowd of about 400 people! The Auction partners parent, faculty, staff and student volunteers with the business community to general event sponsors, catalog ads and merchandise to be auctioned. Our goal is to net $50,000.  Spring Valley alumna Kate Niehaus named a 2011 Rhodes Scholar  

Kate Niehaus      Kate Niehaus, All-American athlete, 14-time state running champion, dedicated scholar and valedictorian of her 2006 Spring Valley High class, named a Rhodes Scholar. The Columbia, S.C. native earned a bachelor's degree in biomechanical engineering in 2010 and a master's degree in bioengineering in 2011 - both at Stanford. Her class and research work focused on biomechanics and her interests lie in its applications to high technology entrepreneurship. Kate plans to pursue a doctorate of philosophy in systems approaches to biomedical science at Oxford.

Rick Crumpler voted into the SCTCCCA Coaches Hall of Fame. 

Anne Long named the 2011 National Federation State Basketball Coach of the Year. 

Michael Armstrong successfully defended his dissertation.  

Congratulations to the following SVH students being selected as a member of the South Carolina All-State Orchestra: Mark Allen, Briana Bell, Sarah Fishburne, Sydney Johnson, DJ Lee, Karen Lee, Song Lee, Martin Li, Christine Nixon, Courtney Noh, Zach Patton, Katie Peffen, David Qu, Keeana Ross, Sarah Smith, Miosha York. 

Porsha Spain received 2nd place in the Senior Video category, and Colton Rabon received 1st place in the Junior Video category at the 2011 Richland County Farm-City Week competition. 

Stacey Baker, Joshua Drews, Katherine Farnell, and Jason Paddock receive National Board Certification.    

Six SVH Art students receive honors at the 2011 Scholastic Arts Awards including three Gold Key and three Silver Key (highest and next highest) Awards. Gold Key winners will go on to New York compete at the national level. SVH Air Force JROTC won the “2011 Terry Sanford High School Invitational Bulldog Drill Championship” in Fayetteville, North Carolina, November 19, 2011. The Vikings defeated 22 Air Force JROTC high schools throughout the state of North Carolina to claim the “Bulldog Classic Drill Meet Overall Grand Championship”. Congratulations to Asia Boulware, Jaylon Brown, Collin Charles, Sierra Cornelius, Cameron Cosby, Aaron Cotton, Brian Diaz, Michael Edwards, Jasmine Eichelberger, Daniel Feliciano, Richard Fish, Datrion Gamble, Samuel George, Breanda Green, Philip Henshaw, Cornelius McKinney, William Miner, David Navarro, Brandon Solomons, Charles Thompson, Trey Townsend, and Evan Woodward      

Spring Valley alumnus Kate Niehaus, currently studying biomechanics at Stanford University, named a Rhodes Scholar. Kate is one of only 32 American students who have achieved this prestigious recognition, and as a result, she will have the opportunity to study at Oxford University in England.      

AP Photography students Porsha Spain won 2nd place in photo-slide show and Colton Rabon won 1st place for photo-video in the annual Richland County Farm City High School Competition.      

Akari Ogawa, Tori Sanford, John Milakovich, Wesley Paulman, and Troy Herrmann earned top chair placement at 2011 Winthrop Invitational Honors Band Clinic.      

Ken Adler successfully renewed National Board Certification.
