1. Review district programs to determine areas of interest.
2. All daytime school volunteers and visitors must check in at the school’s Lobby Guard station and wear the issued identification badge while in the school. This process eliminates the need for daytime volunteers to fill out the district volunteer application.
3. All volunteer hours must be recorded and logged in at the school or given to the school volunteer coordinator. Lobby Guard records volunteer hours worked during the school day, if volunteers remember to sign out. Include hours worked outside of the school setting or after school hours (chaperoning field trips, district functions, athletic/band booster clubs, serving on PTA/PTO boards, foundations, School Improvement Councils, phone calls, e-mails and travel time to and from the place of service, etc.).
4. If chaperoning an overnight field trip, mentoring or tutoring, volunteers must fill out the district volunteer application. These applications are approved for three years but are subject to review.
5. Volunteers seeking approval for overnight field trips should submit an application at least two weeks before the trip. The school will be sent a list of approved chaperones.
6. All volunteers must review the district sexual harrassment program each year. DVDs are available at each school.
7. Volunteers should ask questions before making assumptions about situations they may encounter in schools. Volunteers should remember that anything heard, learned or seen concerning students must be kept confidential.
8. Volunteers should obtain permission to visit other classrooms, students or teachers while working in schools.
9. Volunteers should dress appropriately for the school setting.
10. Volunteers should speak positively about schools and the district, especially while working in the schools or at district functions.
11. Volunteers should know the name of the school's volunteer coordinator or school volunteer contact.
12. Volunteers should feel appreciated and welcome in schools.
