  • Richland Northeast High student wins Sudoku championship - Davis Borucki, a 15-year-old Richland Northeast High student recently won the Intermediate Division of the Philadelphia Inquirer National Sudoku Championship, besting more than 500 competitors.

    Borucki told The State newspaper that he began playing Sudoku in eighth grade and said he tries to do one puzzle a day. His first competition was in 2008 at the second annual National Sudoku Championship.

  • Celebrating National Education Week Nov. 16 – 20 - The National Education Association’s 88th annual American Education Week will be celebrated this week. Annually, superintendent Dr. Steve Hefner sends red delicious apples to each Richland Two employee as a token of his appreciation for their dedication to teaching and learning. Members of the Superintendent’s Cabinet will deliver the apples to all schools and centers on Monday and Tuesday. 

  • Ridge View Teacher recognized by State Board of Education - Ridge View High School biology teacher Linda Hellstein was

    recognized by the State Board of Education for being selected as a National Science Teachers Association New Science Teacher Academy 2009 Fellow. The National Science Teachers Association promotes excellence and innovation in science teaching and learning. The association's Teacher Academy was created to promote quality instruction, support teacher confidence and classroom excellence and improve content knowledge through training and mentoring for early-career science teachers.

    In total, 185 middle and secondary science teachers were chosen from among hundreds of applicants across the country for the year-long professional development program. 

    Hellstein will receive a membership package, online mentoring with trained educators who teach in the same discipline, and the
    opportunity to participate in a variety of web-based professional training activities, including web seminars. In addition, she will
    receive financial support to attend and participate in the 2009 National Conference on Science Education in New Orleans.

     

     

     

     

  • Round Top Elementary volunteers honored - Round Top Elementary School's Improvement Council was honored for its contribution to South Carolina’s public education system Tuesday, Nov. 17 at the River Center, Saluda Shoals Park, 5605 Bush River Road in Columbia.

    “These honorees deserve special recognition because of the many constructive ways they affect students’ lives," said State Superintendent of Education Dr. Jim Rex. "Each of their stories is an inspirational illustration of how adults can work with students to create positive momentum toward success in school."

    The annual Volunteer Awards are authorized by the Education Improvement Act of 1984 and are designed to salute the time, energy, talents and other resources contributed to South Carolina schools. Winners are selected by a statewide panel of judges.

    at the Richland School District Two Conference Center at Columbia Place Mall. Winners were: Alyssa Castelluccio (Blythewood Middle School), Christian Cromartie (Longleaf Middle School), Mark Doucette (E.L. Wright Middle), Jeremiah Buoy (Summit Parkway Middle) and Charles Gorman (Dent Middle). Lions Club International sponsors the contest each year as a way of encouraging young people in local communities to think about the importance of world peace, tolerance and international understanding, and to pass it on. Students are able to share their unique visions with the world through the pictures they create.

  • Child development slots available - Spears Creek Road Child Development Center, a pre-school program based in several schools in the district, has announced it has several tuition-based openings. The child development program provides a cognitively challenging environment where children are encouraged to explore, investigate and create. Learning activities are child centered and are developmentally appropriate. The curriculum is experience-rich in the areas of math, language, science, social studies, music, movement and the visual arts. Computer stations are in each of the classrooms where children work with appropriate educational software. For more information, call lead teacher Sabina Mosso-Taylor at 865.5355.

  • Expanded Choice and Magnet Programs - Through Expanded Choice and Magnet programs, Richland Two families have access to a variety of specialized educational offerings. Though our students are assigned to schools based on their residential address, they may apply to a Magnet school, a school with a Magnet program or another school within the district through Expanded Choice. Expanded Choice offers parents and students residing in Richland Two the opportunity to request permission to attend a school other than their residentially assigned school. Please remember that space is limited, and parents must provide transportation for students who choose programs that are not at their residentially zoned school.

    A Magnet and Expanded Choice Fair will be held Dec. 2, at Richland Northeast High School at 6:30 p.m. Additionally, 
    meetings to provide more information on individual schools and Magnet Programs will take place in January.

    Applications will be available online from January 5, 2010 through January 29, 2010. In March, parents will be notified about whether students have been accepted into the program of their choice.

  • The Stephen W. Hefner Retirement Gala - Save the date for the Stephen W. Hefner Retirement Gala: A Tribute to 36 Years of Excellence in Education in Richland Two. The gala will be held March 12, 2010 at the Columbia Convention Center. Ticket information is coming soon. The gala is sponsored by the Richland Two Education Foundation.
